I Remember (Cindy Sherman)

2000. Single-channel video, 4:53 mins

Ben Judd’s I Remember (Cindy Sherman) suggests a feeling of connectedness with anonymous women on the street. The voice-over describes things that the women are wearing or doing, such as “I remember when you were walking along wearing your brown coat”, or “I remember when you were smoking a cigarette and looking up at the sky.” It is as if he is reminiscing about intimate memories, yet the reminiscences are bland and impersonal.

The cut out heads are from Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills. As well as the connotations in Sherman’s work of charade and artifice, the cut outs held up in front of women’s faces again produces an awkward dichotomy of familiarity and removedness, of knowing something or someone, and also being a stranger.
